Workshop for developing Water Sector Green Accounts for Sri Lanka


    “Workshop for developing Water Sector Green Accounts for Sri Lanka” was held at the Ministry of Mahaweli Development & Environment, “Sobadam Piyasa“, Battaramulla on 28.02.2019 from 9.30 am to 2.30 pm.

    It was organized to make aware the stakeholders about System of Environment Economic Account (SEEA) framework, water supply and use tables, water stock accounts and water emission accounts.

    The stakeholders made their commitment for the future contribution to the Water Accounts for Sri Lanka. Several key Ministries and Institutes in relation to the water supply and consumption, participated at the event including the Forces of Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka Police.

    Green Accounting is a Sustainable Development Tool, useful in the decision making process of a country which could provide a systematic way to incorporate the value of environmental contribution. It is important tool for understand the role play by the natural environment in the economy.

    The Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment has decided to compile Green Accounts in Sri Lanka which was along felt need of this Ministry. As the water is an important natural resource in our environment, it is decided to initiate to develop a process for Water Account in the country.
